Boys will be boys and that means most likely that they will get messy, like to play in the dirt and with ungodly creatures that freak their parents out. One thing a boy’s parent could do is choose his hairstyle for him, so he can look well groomed and polished while still playing in the mud.
Boys Hairstyles Length
Boys hairstyles lengths can range from short, medium or long. There are a lot of different hairstyles a young boy can have, it is up to him if he is of age or his parents when he is younger to decide the hairstyle that is right for him. Whether longs or short, there are trendy boy’s hairstyles that are suitable for every boy from toddlers to teens.
Popular Boys Hairstyles Trends
The Layered boy’s Haircut: This haircut is usually for medium to long length hairs types.
The Short Buzz Cut: This is a popular hairstyle for young boys, primarily teenagers or just before they become teens. The buzz cut is a simple cut where mostly all of the hair is shaved to an extremely low length, throughout the head.
French Crop Hairstyle for Boys: It is a great style for a boy, because it gives the hair a little personality and requires very little maintenance.

I have to agree its almost impossible to find pictures for your kids for ideas on a new hair style There’s sites after sites for girls but nothing for teenage boys yet there the hardest to get ideas for.
4:51 pm
Hello Lisa and Helen,
I appreciate your input and we are glad to say that we have now included a picture gallery for boys hairstyles. If you are looking for a particular type of haircut for boy, then let us know.
7:06 pm
I am also very frustrated. I feel like I get sent on a wild goose chase. I give criteria for a search, and then I get site options that claim to have hundreds of photos to look at. Then I click on one and instead of ideas I get yet another list of other sites to look at. Maybe 1 out of 15 will actually show me pictures, but there are so few that it doesn’t help. I’ve now spent another hour and a half and have found nothing I can use for my 5 year old.
Please expand your gallery. The most I’ve seen at one site is 36 and they are all very short cuts. Not every mom wants a buzz cut for their son. I’d like to see some longer options.
4:54 pm
I see I am not the only mom on an extremely long goose chase. I have two weeks till the start of school and am no closer to finding a style for my five year old. I don’t want the buzz cut and am exasperated trying to find alternatives. I too would like to see some longer options.
5:33 pm
Another frustrated mom sitting here with my 9 year old son! thanks a lot for nothing! Hardly any pictures to show him to choose from. I guess will just give him a buzz cut again.
7:45 pm
Another frustrated mom here. My son is starting kindergarten and his face shape is best set off by slightly longer hair yet I am having no luck whatsoever on finding ideas on how to get it cut. Very frustrating.

I have been looking for a few years for a style for boys of color without luck. Other than a short cut, a fade and a slanted line I have seen nothing to choose from. When I want to get creative the barbers need a picture and none exsist. My son has long hair but needs something other than braids or no hair at all.
4:49 pm
Yep I am with the other moms. I have one son in middle school and the other in 5th grade and I am looking for older boy hair cuts. All I can say is GRRRRR!!
6:05 am
Well there are definately other hairstyles for boys too and not just buzz haircut only!! As shown above layered hairstyles and long boys hairstyles looks great on young boys…
11:29 am
My 12 year old son has hair down his back and wants it cut into a style have searched for hours on the internet to try and just get some pictures to show him but have given up, he likes Zack and Cody’s haircut from Zack and Cody’s Suite Life so gonna go with that but I bet you when I go to the hairdressers and show them the pictures he comes out with something completely different (have had this happen with one of my other sons and he wore a hat for months till it grew out) nothing is never easy when you have three sons…. could moan about clothes, hair etc for hours on this subject but wont bore you……
10:07 pm
I just love the longer hair styles for boy now and I’ve grown my two boys’ hair out. I went to the salon to get it trimmed and the stylist said “have you tried curling it?” I said, like what????? She told me that she has probably a dozen moms who are actually curling their sons’ hair with mostly curling irons but a few with those foam rollers. She says its becoming much more acceptable to do stuff like this with boys longer hair but I’m not sure I’m ready for that. Has anyone else heard of this? I’m not in a New York or LA where you might expect this but in a middle size, fairly conservative city.
8:11 pm
Like the other moms here, I would like to get some more pictures for longer styles on boys. I have been trying to grow out my son’s hair and its come to a point where I have to take him to a salon, especially in the front, its falling over his eyes now (hair at the back is still pretty short). His hair is silky straight and pretty thick. I really like to achieve the layered look for him but need to get a direction on how to get that .
11:11 pm
Well I’m in the same boat as the rest of you. Found a thousand sites but not one actually offering any help. My son’s hair has reached the poing where it’s no longer stylish. We want to move on but can’t seem to find a thing that we agree on he’s got great hair and we want to keep the most of the lenght but senior pix are in the next couple weeks and can’t find any thing so that we don’t look like a new hair cut
2:22 pm
Can you not just take our Mom advice already and just post a whole gallery of boy hair styles. You know, a large variety of lengths, textures, colors, and at different ages. Geez, You hairstyle websites sure know how to frustrate a mom on a mission to get her kid a decent hair style.
1:57 pm
In response to Annette, I’m a hairdresser and I can tell you we have several boys that get their hair curled with a curling iron after their cut. The yall have longer hair about shoulder length or longer. The get nothing but compliments from everyone in our salon and it gives them confidence to wear their hair curled more often. It does seem to be a growing trend we ahve given a few boys perms also its no big deal to us anf the boys love heir new look. As far as the sponge rollers yes we have mothers who set their sons hair every couple of days on sponge rollers. Hope this helps you make a decision, try it if your son doesn’t like his curls just wash them out.
10:50 pm
SERIOUSLY!! Aren’t there enough complaints now that you can do something about it? Our boys don’t want short cuts!! I have 3 boys all with long hair and there seem to be no options for cuts. It’s like the salons don’t even know what to do because they are only taught the short cuts so they end up butchering the poor kids!! This is really frustrating!!!!!!!!

Annette, I’m one of those Moms who enjoy doing their son’s hair in curls and other girly styles. He’s had long hair all his life and a few years ago he asked if he could have curls, like his big sister. After some hesitation I took him to my stylist and she did some curls with a curling iron — he loved it and I could not believe how pretty he looked! She suggested I try some rollers at home so I did him in my hot rollers. Since then (He’s now 10) I’ve been doing his hair on rollers a few times a week and I take him in for a trim and roller set every couple of months. I’ve gradually added headbands, barrettes, etc. And yes, he’ll even sleep in foam curlers on Saturday night before church!
My stylist says she does probably one boy every couple of months in feminine hairstyles, brought in by their mothers. She has a couple of ‘regulars’ and she thinks it’s becoming more common.
He loves his hairdos & I think it’s fine to let boys express their girlish side as long as it’s their choice.
6:43 pm
Traci, I was interested in your post because I’ve got a longhaired (7 year old) son and we’ve been thinking about new ways to do his hair. It’s cut in a bob off his shoulders with bangs (so cute!). We live in a fairly conservative area but I’ve seen more boys with long hair and my stylist also tells me it’s becoming more common for boys to try curls, braids, etc. Anyway I’ve got some questions:
How does your son wear his hair to school? Does he get much teasing? Do other people see him in curlers? Does he wear curlers in public? After you roll it, does he wear it down? How does he feel about having it done at the salon? Does he wear other girls’ things (like skirts), or have his nails done?
Any more information you could provide would be most helpful. thanks for supporting boys with long hair!
Best,
S
8:24 pm
Hey Sarah, thanks for your response! Yes, Brian does get some teasing at school but the teachers and the principal have been very supportive and have tried to teach the kids about not judging people by their appearance and so on.
For school he wears a high ponytail, or a headband, or braided pigtails. He’s been out in rollers a couple of times when I had to run errands but we haven’t run into anyone we know. I’m pretty careful about not having him be seen in rollers by his friends. Our family is familiar with his girly hairstyles and for the most part they don’t think it’s a big deal. After I roll it he usually wears it back in a headband or in 2 barrettes, although I’ve done sort of a ‘messy updo’ for him a couple of times for fun.
Other girls’ things, not really, although I did get him a pair of girls’ white keds and he wears those all the time on weekends. I’m kind of letting him figure out how far he wants to go with this – he’s tried on a couple of his sister’s old skirts and he asked me the other day if boys can try out for cheerleader. And yes, he wears nail polish occasionally but takes it off for school.
Oh yeah, as far as going to the salon – he really enjoys the attention he gets from the girls when he goes in, and they love doing his nails when he’s under the dryer and that sort of thing. But he’s still pretty shy about seen in public in rollers, even in the salon, so I let him make up his mind about it.
I’d love to hear more about your son and what he ends up deciding …. Feel free to email me at tt8847@gmail.com.
Good luck!

I’m glad I’m not the only one having a difficult time finding pictures of boys with long hairstyles. My 2.5 year old has hair with bangs to his eyebrows and then slopes pretty steeply down the sides and is past his shoulders in the back. I think it is adorable and every time I ask him if he wants his hair like his brother’s, a traditional boy cut, he says no. He refuses to let me cut it and just trimming his bangs is an ordeal because he does NOT want me to cut his hair. I don’t need to cut it shorter, well the bangs I do otherwise it would be a mess and he couldn’t see, but otherwise I’m fine with him having long hair and I take good care of it. Anyway, as much as I think it’s cute as is, I’d maybe like to find a better way to shape it or maybe just trim it and I’d like pictures. I need some ideas to go off of and it’s been impossible to find anything. If there were more pictures of boys with long hair floating around it would help us moms and maybe everyone else would realize it’s normal for boys to have long hair too! Maybe we need our own website if no one else is going to help!
6:56 pm
I agree with everyone else! I have always given my boys a buzzcut and finally decided to grow out their hair and try something new. Now they have long hair and I cannot find anything new. I have to find something because my oldest is on the brink of being in violation of school rules for hair length! Why can there just be pictures of several different styles, not just the standard four: Buzz, Spike, Comb-down and side Swept? So much for the ‘helpful’ world wide web!
6:52 pm
It seems that a lot of guys are using curlers these days. I suppose with longer hair you would naturally have to expect it. I know a few ladies that use the foam rollers on their son’s hair. They are easy to sleep on and make for nice curly styles.
7:16 am
I too have heard that curlers are making a comeback, especially in regards to their use on boys. It seems that with longer hairstyles being so popular these days… anything goes! I think it’s great to see that some of the earlier taboos and stereotypes are finally being shattered. There’s nothing gay or effeminate about guys wanting to explore different styling options with their hair.

I’m a mother who sets her sons hair on sponge rollers every other night and he sleeps in them. His hair is about 4 inches below his shoulders and he has the most beautiful curls when I take his hair down. If I see him trying to keep his hair out of his face I always put either a barrette in each side or one on the top. He goes anywhere he wants with his curls and barrettes or sometime with his hair in curlers. He is 8 and is so much a girl in his looks and mannerisms, he does wear polish on his toes and some times on his fingers, I leave it up to him if he wants me to polish his nails. He also has his ears pierced which look so cute with his curls. My email is bakerstephanie74@yahoo.com if anyone would like to chat about boys and curls
11:22 pm
Stephanie I am the mother of a long hair boy who is 6 and I to have started setting his hair on sponge rollers after every shower. He had wanted curls like mine for a long time sio I finally started about 1 yr ago. I took him to m salon and had my stylist give him a cut with bangs and some layering after the cut she curled his hair for him and you could tell by the excitment in his face he loved it. He goes every where with his hair in curls with sometimes barrettes or a headband. He hasn’t asked for polish or to get his ears pierced but I will be glad to do it for him. Does your son wear and girls cloths or have you tried any makeup on him? The salon I go to has a 12 yr old boy who gets a roller set on his long har every sat for church alon with his mother and he is usually wearing a femmine outfit.
2:31 pm
OMG. Finally other moms like me. I have an 11 (soon to be 12) year old. He goes to a private school. He wants to wear his hair long but it can only be sooo long. We have to be careful how his hair is cut because the style can make him look like a girl. He’ll have NOTHING to do with that. So WHY is it we CANNOT find pictures of boy hairstyles? Someone please help us!
10:34 pm
I am a mother of a long hair 5yr old boy whos hair is about 8in below his shoulders. I have been looking for a new style for boys with long hair but have found none. I ead al the post about curling boys hair and was so excited and couldn’t wait to try it. I took my son to have his ends trimes for the holidays and endedup getting about 4 in cut and the girl put alot of layering in his hair. She asked him if he would like his hair curled and if he said no that was ok and if he said yes I would be extremely happy. She let him watch in the mirror the entire time she curled his hair and he was fascinated with his curls. She took her time and placed all the curls injust the right places and his hair looked so beautiful. we went to church that night and you would not believe all the girls aroung him complimenting his hair. I have used the curling iron twice on his hair for him and he really takes such good care of his culrs which he never worried about his long hair. When school starts back in a couple of days I plan on setting his hair on the sponge rollers for him. Thanks ladies for your suggestions Sherry

After reading the posts here and elsewhere about boys having their hair curled I got up my courage and asked my son (now
if he’d like to try curly boys hairstyle. He said Sure! (His older sister and I are in rollers 2-3 times a week so he’s used to the idea.) We talked to his stylist when he was in just before Christmas and she went over some options with us — curling iron, ‘wetset’ at the salon, hot rollers, and so on. He wasn’t quite ready to sit under the dryer with his hair up at the salon, so we did an experimental set that Saturday at home on hot rollers. He loved the curly boys hairstyle and so did everyone who saw him (even his Dad said “Very Nice.”) I’m still trying to figure out the routine but I’ve put him up in velcro rollers a few times since and he wants to try it for school. This will mean some extra time in the mornings but I really love his curls and we’re going to see how it goes — he’s going to try sleeping in the sponge rollers this weekend. Thanks for all the suggestions over boys hairstyles and haircuts and the brave boys in curls out there!

I was surprised when my SIL sent me this website. We’ve teased her for years about her setting her nine year old sons hair style, now she claims she’s a trendsetter!
Actually, while it really does seem strange to me to see a little boy in curlers, his hair isn’t terribly long, doesn’t look too girly and he IS cute as a button.
Since I’ve started looking I have seen a number of little boys hairstyles whose hair looks like maybe it wasn’t naturally curly. Maybe there are more than I thought.
I guess it’s a brave new world where little boys can do anything they want. I’m for that, I suppose.
10:00 pm
I’ve been looking around on the Web for some new hairdos for my 7-year-old and after reading the posts here (and a few other sites) all I can say is Wow! I had to ask my hairstylist if there’s any truth to this whole boys-in-curls things and she said Oh yeah, I’ve been doing a few of my regular boys in curls for a while now. She said she usually uses a curling iron but a few times she’s actually set the boy’s hairstyle in rollers and dried it under the dryer! She has at least one Mom for sure who sets her son’s hair (about 6 yrs old, she said) in sponge curlers regularly (she thinks there’s more that do this but hasn’t heard them talk about it). She also has a couple of men clients who come in for shampoos and sets regularly.
I have to say I’m intrigued and would like to introduce my son to the idea. Ladies who curl their sons’ hair, any thoughts on introducing a long-haired boy to the world of curlers / curling irons/ dryers?
Thanks so much!

Hi Rachel, I’m not sure I can help cause my son asked for curls — I just supplied the rollers; (the encouragement)! But I’d say just be casual about it and say hey this is something that’d be fun to try. Do his hairstyle at home on a Saturday and see how he likes it. If he’s not comfortable with it he’ll tell you for sure!
It also really helps if you have a hairstylist that he likes and trusts. Our hair stylist has been key in getting Brian to try ‘girly’ hairstyles. And please let him know that, while it’s fine to use rollers and other accessories in your hair, boy or girl, other people might find it odd.
Good luck and please keep us posted!

Rachel I started just brushing my sons long hair alot and slowly started trying different styles on him before i started curling his hair. the whole time I would be brushing his hair I would always talk about curls and cute boys hairstyles and tell him alot of boys are wearing their hair in curls. After I started curling his hair it has made him alot calmer because he doesn’t want to mess his curls up. I would do a high pony tail and just put a few curls in it with my curling iron. He has so much confidence and love being in curls all the time. I think all children boys or girls love the attention and bonding from a mother spending time with them and doing their hair. He plays outside in the summer with rollers in his hair and thinks nothing about it. I have had my hairstylist do a roller set on him twice at the salon and he just thinks thats the greatest thing ever sitting under the warm dryer in curlers. If I can be any more help my email is bakerstephanie74@yahoo.com
2:25 pm
Okay, for all you women/moms who are curling your boys hair, WHAT THE HECK? Do you want your kids to get ridiculed and teased at school and everywhere else they go? And I’m not even going to start on the idea of taking your boys out in PUBLIC with their hair in rollers!! Just don’t cry and wonder how it happened when they come home from college with their new “special friend” Chad on their arm! You’re raising a bunch of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy hosts.
Now how about an EASY to find gallery of nothing but BOYS HAIRSTYLES that give us moms who are raising Boys (not sissy mammas boys) to choose from?
2:18 pm
SARAH was just wondering how your doing with your sons hair and if he is sleeping in sponge rollers. Does any one tease him at school. If you would like to talk about or bys and heir hair and curls email me at bakerstephanie74@yahoo.com

I was also looking for some examples of longer boys hairstyles when I found this thread. I’m fairly new to the hairstyling business–just graduated about 3 months ago and am lucky to have found a fairly good job at a salon. Several things in this thread that I can certainly relate to.
There is certainly a shortage of examples of longer hairstyles for boys. Even in the large collection of style books in our salon, there’s really nothing to be found. And there is certainly a need for it b/c, as many of you have observed, there are a lot of boys with longer hair these days. If I had to give any advice on where to find hair styles, asian boys and young men have been wearing some progressive hairstyles for a while now. Of course, asian hair has a particular texture so some styles may be difficult to duplicate, but it’s a start maybe.
And as far as boys wearing hairstyles that are more girlish (curls, braids, etc), I’ve certainly seen some of that. Not a huge amount–probably 4 or 5 boys since I’ve been working. But I asked some of the stylists who have been around a while about it and they said that it’s not uncommon. Two of the boys I’ve seen personally were older boys, probably young teens. One requested a more girlish hairstyle (blunt-cut bangs, long in the back) which we did, but the other was obviously being coerced by his mother and a girl I presume was his older sister. They eventually talked him into (more like bullied) getting a layered style, about shoulder-length. I admit, it did look good, but obviously a more feminine look. And then I’ve seen some younger boys with some pretty girlish looks. One boy comes in with his mom who is a very frequent customer (she has the Posh bob that she has to keep looking sharp
). He has very long hair and I’ve seen it curled, in pigtails, and with barrettes/clips. I probably wouldn’t have realized that he was a boy except that his mother doesn’t try to hide that his name is Kevin. I’ve only cut Kevin’s hair once, and just a trim, but it’s obvious that his mother likes keeping his hair longer and enjoys styling it.
6:43 pm
I work at a mall salon and we do quite a few kids. One of our customers had heard a discussion about this topic and gave me the web address.
What we see if moms who hover over use when getting their little boys haircuts. It might be 8 inches long and they want to make sure we don’t cut more than a half inch off. Seriously, they’re way worse with boys than with girls. And some of these boys REALLY need a haircut.
The only one we’ve ever had that seemed to be deliberately getting her son a girl’s kind of hairstyle was one who brought a six year old in for a FIRST haircut. His hair was waistlenght and not particularly attractive, just long and straggly. But mom and grandma came in with video cameras to record the whole business. Other than the length he started with, the video recording wasn’t all that unusual.
But then mom pulled a picture out of her purse and told the stylist that’s how she wanted it cut. The little boy was saying he wanted to get a mohawk. And mom got him a shoulder length bob, complete with long bangs.
He looked like pretty bedraggled when he came in, but when he went out, he just looked pretty. You absolutely couldn’t tell he was a boy. And I think that’s exactly what mom and grandma wanted… not a boy.

I’m a hairdresser and I have had a few mothers bring their boys in. I have two regulars hat always have me do their sons hair in curls. I saw these posts and I had to comment because my nephew is going to a costume party tomorrow as a girl and I’m going to do him all up! – it’s going to be fun! jennydavidek@yahoo.com

That kind of sounds like a mullet?
I personally think boys and men have too few styling options. Hair is hair. Just look at some of the male hair from centuries ago.
11:54 pm
My 7yr old boy has hair that reaches just past his waist and bangs in front. He likes his hair long but hates being told he looks like a girl. He wants to keep his hair long, but in a more boyish style. We are very proud that our boy is a boy and have no desire to make him girly at all. boys can look very masculane with long hair if it’s done right. unfortunatly, I don’t know how to do it right at such a young age, when his feathers are still so gender neutral and He’s still so pretty. Can anyone suggest a long BOYISH hair style ? That would be very helpful .
10:10 pm
I’m a mom of two boys (12 &
and I’m completely blown away by what I’m hearing. Boys in curlers, painting their nails, possible considering wearing skirts? What’s next? Are you raising boys or girls? There’s nothing wrong with having your boy look good with a great hairstyle, but come on people. My oldest is a soccer player and has very fine hair and keeps it somewhat long. I think he looks good and there’s definately no question about his gender. When you have to wonder if that’s a boy or girl walking down the street it’s time to cut the hair.
2:30 pm
I have a 12 year old boy who wants long hair, and I’ve let him grow it out several times, but it always ends up looking greasy, stringy and just plain yuck. I have dated guys with long hair, and as a medieval re-enactor most of the guys I hang out with have long hair, but THEY KEEP IT LOOKING NICE. My son insists that his hair is fine and refuses to get it cut, but hates when people call him a girl or tease him about his looks. (He’s so pretty it’s flippin’ scary!!!) I’ve tried to talk to him about getting a nice style- long is fine if it’s not a stringy mop- but it’s like a power struggle and he stubbornly refuses. After getting into a fight at school over his appearance with the class bully and being put on suspension (my son has never been in trouble before) I am having to take matters into my own hands with his appearance. Since his idea and my idea of “Clean and Kept” seem to be polar opposites we now have the rule of “You can grow your hair as long as you want when you can also grow a mustache.” Hopefully by then he’ll have mentally and emotionally matured enough to handle the jerks that like to tease about appearances. Like the rest of you I am woefully searching for pictures that don’t exhist to give him options that aren’t a buzz, but still let him have style without the bully bullseye targeting his forhead. (For those of you who live somewhere that it’s not a problem- I envy you.)
I want my son to be happy, and have the opportunity to express himself. But getting into fights over hair that he wants but doesn’t want to take care of is not making him happy at all. (And I’m not too thrilled either!) I’ve even let him dye it purple in the summers (he’s not allowed hair color at his school) and it looked FABULOUS!!! Right up until he stopped washing and combing it daily.
So. good luck to all of you searching for pictures- I must continue my quest as well. *hint-hint to the moderators of this site!!!*

to all:
As a child, my mom, a hairdresser kept growing my baby curls till they reached my waist. I absolutely loved the time before bed when she would come in and as I sat on my bed, would brush out my hair every night. I loved having long hair sooooo much. I really didn’t care how much teasing i got in school. Actually, most girls loved it, and always wanted to braid it for me. I eventually asked her to cut it shorter when i reached junior high. I wound up with a page boy/ bob…shoulders and ends curled under with a regular body wave. But i really longed for the length again, so I immediately started letting it grow once more. I stopped at mid back, and have worn it that way to this day. I am not gay, although I have been confused as a girl many times in my life.

Iam also a frustrated mother of 3year old boy who just wants to see pictures of more modern haircuts. Longer styles as my son has longer hair but Iam wanting some kind of shape to it, but keeping the length. Every site so far is either short or have no pictures at all.
Iam almost pulling my hair out with frustration.
4:16 pm
I just ran across this website and I am really excited to read about mom’s who have boys who ‘s hair requires special attention. I’ve never read much about how other mom’s styles their boys hair. My 9 year old has beautiful strawberry-bvlond hair. Shannon’s hair is thick, wavy, and would seem to “frizz” up especially if the weather is humid and /or “snowy”. We live about 80 miles south of Fairbabnks, Alaska. Because of some serious medical issues I home-school him most of the year because he is unable to safely maintain sufficient body heat and it would be unfair to expect the school keep the classroom warm enough for him without making all of the other children miserable.
My best friend is a hairdresser and she wantedI wasn’t sure how he would react to that but I brought him down to the salon in Fairbanks and was an angel. He actually enjoyed the attention and she put him under the dryer during the perm and he loved being under the dryer. The heat felt good to him. He was precious with his hair on perming curlers. After the perm she decided to put his hair on small barrel rollers and puit him back under the dryer. Since then, I have been shampooing his hair and rolling it and I bought a professional salon dryer for him ands I also use a portable hairdryer (with the bonnet). We’ve continued to “experiment” and now I set his hair on hot rollers just before we leave to go somewhere. Since he hates for his hair to get tangled up at night I almost always roll his hair on sponge rollers for bed. My sister lives down in Talketna and she and her tw daughters (both teenagers) and they just love it. Because our winters are very dangerous I really seldom take him out of our home and so I usually keep him in his curlers because it is just easier that way. I would never “parade” him around when I have him in curlers and really, about the only time that anyone sees him in curlers is when I bring him to the salon every couple of months to have his hair permed. When I look back I only wish I would have tried this when he was 5 or 6. It often turned into a battle and often we would both end up in tears. I’ve heard that some women have made unfair comments about how I do his hair made only out of ignorance. It’s no one’s business if I want to keep him in curls. He likes his curls and is not “stressed” when we put him in curlers or I keep him under a warm dryer. If he ever told me he does not want his hair permed or put on curlers, I would not insist on it. His hair doesn’t look “feminine” either. I am a very protective mom and I do bundle him up nice and warm but in appropriate clothes that are gender-appropriate. I also would mention that it takes me about 30 minutes to shampoo and put him in curlers and get him under a warm, pre-heated dryer and we both enjoy that opportunity to talk and bond. And he would stay under the dryer all day if I would let him. He just likes to be kept warm! I really enjoy reading about nother moms experience with their boys hair care.

I was at my ahir slon today ans there was a little boy maybe 6 or 7 with long hair with barrettes in his hair his was a first for me. the stylist took his barrettes out shampooed and cut his hair then proceded to curl his hair with a curling iron. his hair look so cute with all his loose curls and after sprying his hair and putting the barrettes one on each side his mother said donnie lets go shopping. when I asked my stylist if this is becoming more common for boys she said yes. She said ther have 4 or 5 that get curls every time mother brings them in and all of them have hair below their shoulders. Roller sets are not uncommon for special occassion for the boys. i was blown away by this. would love to hear about other boys in curls

I, too, am searching and finding a few model haircuts. This sure lacks what could be a helpful tool to parents and kids alike.

Go to, and join if necessary, Yahoo group ROLLEDOVER Then go to Photos and look on page one at “Chris’s Curls” and on page two “Ethan” and “Evan” and “Gage in curlers” and page five “R&P’s Male settings (great collection of drawings). These are all appropriate for viewing by all, most the contents are of pictures of men.

I don’t feel so alone now, I have been setting my sons hair in rollers for the past couple of years. He is 10 years old and for as long as I can remember has wanted to wear his hair long. At first I was reluctant to set his hair but he would watch me put my hair up and beg me to do his as well. The only rollers I had at the time were some pretty old fashioned brush rollers, my mothers to be exact. So he did complain a little about sleeping in those but I was amazed at how pretty his hair looked in the morning. Just for fun I have styled his hair in some pretty feminine hairstyles, french twists and updo’s with lots of teasing and hairspray and he looks absolutely adorable. I have keep our little beauty parlor sessions private not that he would mind though, the girlier the style the happier he is. It took me awhile getting used to his feminine tendencies but as long as he truly wants to wear his hair in feminine hairdo’s I am happy to oblige.

I’ve had the same problem… my son (8) also has long hair and wanted a cut that was layered and shaggy like the boys on disney and nickelodeon… we looked through the books at the salon and there was almost nothing for boys! One book only had 2 pictures and they were both of really short hair…
I thought I was clear… just trim up the front a bit so it doesn’t cover his eyes… and a few long layers to give the back some shape…. the woman gave him a mullet. I don’t know what on earth made her think he’d want “spiky” hair on top… but she did it without asking. I could cry. His grandmother is trying to “save” it as we speak and then he and I are off to buy a baseball cap.

hi, my 2.5 year old has beautiful long hair past his shoulders and we are in no rush to cut it, as we didnt cut his 2 older brothers hair till they were 5, however after trial and error with our eldest two boys i realised that it is best to leave boys without a fringe or bangs as some call it, grow it out, we clipped our sons back with black clips when he was a baby and it was in his eyes and now when he goes to playcentre or is busy doing something messy we just tye it back. alot of indiginous people grow there childrens hair long, i personally just think it makes them look far too old when they are little if they have short hair. my son does OFTEN get mistaken for a girl though, even though he is very much a boys boy, and we dress him in what i would call traditional boys colours etc,

i have a Saturday job in a salon and also work a couple of evenings a week. i’ve also seen a few boys getting their hair curled by the stylists, most of the time with a curling iron, but sometimes on rollers too. It’s not super common but it’s not like that unusual that i am that surprised either now. Sometimes the ones who have their hair done with the curling iron is like a one off thing or a sudden impulse, sometimes the stylist suggests it for example, but the ones who have the roller sets of course are much more planned. I’ve also seen some boys with french braids too which I think looks really good on either gender. I love talking hair. Spangles69@yahoo.com

Just trying to update from hairdresser and women who are still seeing the treand of boys getting curls at the salon. My son just turned 9 and I had a small party at my salon for him and 3 of his little girlfriends , they all got their fingers and toes polished a lillte makeup and all had their hair curled, it was so much fun for all involved he is already asking for the same for next year. I still set his hair at least every other day and have ben putting it up because its so hot here now. He is always wanting to go to the salon because he just loves all the attention and the cute styles the girls puthis hair in. I know he is more femmine brobabley than most of the boys I have read about on the site but thats who he is and I love and support him If any one wants to contact me to chat my email is bakerstephanie74@yahoo.com

I have a 6 year old son who is mixed. He doesn’t like the buzz cut or bald look but neither does he want an afro or even a mini-fro. I need pictures of short hair styles that are not a buzz cut. Any ideas on where I can get picutres to show my son.

Hope you all dont mind. I am a 13 year old boy whose mother just showed me this site. I appriciate very much what you are writing and trying to do. Long hair is great, I have it and like it lots when mom puts it in rolers. They are warm. They mean I have to sit down for a long time, like school.
I get mine cut about 2 years and trimmed each six months. I dont remember my hair being shorter then my elbows.. I feel it at just past my waiste now.
Mom does not curl it anymore but I do. She did it last when I was 10 and I kind of just took over. It feels so soft and kind of tickles as it goes across my back.
For a few years people would think I was a girl. I still get that from time to time.. ususally from older people or someone not knowing me from behind.
My sister and mom used to dress me up and style my hair. I do dnot remember makeup except when my sister played dress up. I didnt like it at first but then it just seemed like something fun to see what people would think. I dont do it now but wonder if I can.
I really never hear about any long hair styles for guys so it is less confusing when I just braid it or ware it straight when it is down. Having short bangs is just hard to keep it pulled back and makes you look to mush like a girls style.
Because I never find good styles for boys like me, I have had it done into whatever girl like style fits me well and if it seems like a time it could be embarassing I just braid or pull the front and sides back. Leaving the warm long back hanging down.
Anyhow. I think having long hair can be great for little boys and even as long as it it kept up, for older guys.
I run and high jump and only with a strong perm, or if it is windy, does it get in the way. Again braid and high ponytail. I personally put it in a bun when I jump. Or at least a couple of the girls on the team will.
It make me feel good now that I have worn it in public for a time. Like im more confidnet. I love the good attention and I really like it when a girl asks me for advice.

Besty you should have not put your son in ballet because thats for irls cut his hair short,so he can be a man.Thats right just joking just take him out of ballet and let him decide how his hair should be…
8:13 pm
I certainly do not want to sound judgemental but are you all joking? I am sorry but I think this would be extremely confusing for a young boy to wear curlers in their hair, put on make-up and nailpolish and wear feminine clothing. I think it is difficult enough to make wise decisions in this world without throwing more controversy into their lives. They are your children and you can do what you want but I have three boys of various ages and I would never put their hair in braids and ponytails so they can be made fun of by the other kids. Like I said, it is difficult enough to be a kid why add to the discomfort and problems of life? Cut their hair short~that eliminates tons of drama.
11:57 am
i agree, there are no sites for the shorter layered look for boys…ugh.
btw there is someone at my son’s school with long hair in a boy’s uniform but I cannot tell if it’s a girl who prefers the boy’s uniform or a boy. i can’t stand long hair on young boys.

I want to see some real photos of boys hair styles? The fade, french crop style and others and been described but no photos to show my son!!! I love the internet for it’s expanse and opportunity to possibly find what you need, but this is a case where your on a wild goose chase, just for photos of hair styles! I know you all can do better…..
