 African American Hairstyle Picture

The best African American hairstyles are looks that reflect a proud heritage and work with the texture of African American hair, not against it. Traditional African American hairstyles such as cornrows, and modern enhancements to them such as hair weaves are among the best ways to maximize the beauty of African American hair.

African American Hairstyles : Strong On Heritage

Cornrows, a customary African American hairstyle that originated in sub-Saharan Africa , refers to hair that is braided tightly and close to the scalp to produce unbroken lines. These braids can be done in straight lines or in patterns, and may take hours to accomplish depending on how intricate the design is, but once they are in place they are among the easiest to maintain of African American hairstyles because the wearer can wash his or her head carefully without removing the braids. Cornrows were first popularized in the United States in the 1950′s and have gone in and out of fashion since then. They are currently experiencing a resurgence due to their ease of maintenance.

Hair Weaves for African American Women

Hair weaves are a particular type of hair extension that work well with cornrows because they are attached to the natural hair with thread and glue. The natural hair is styled in tiny cornrows along the middle of the scalp and the hair extension (which may be made of human hair or synthetic) is sewn into the cornrows and then glued to make sure it stays in place. The women’s natural hair is then combed over the spot where the hair is attached so it is not noticeable. Hair weaves are a great way to create longer African American hairstyles without waiting for your hair to grow out.

This site is good and provides great tips on new hairstyles for women. If your looking to help those with African American hair which is much more difficult to manage, some more information and pictures would be helpful. It’s hard to find hairstyles for my hair type that are natural. could you post some natural African american hairstyles up (other than an afro please…)

#8 Elizabeth :

what you have shown are black women with western hairstyles. Where are the naturals? I have sported a low fro for over 30 years and these pictures are not truly african american hair. I disagree with Nicole; please post afros. More sisters are wearing their own hair and afros are just one form of what is natural. AA hair is worn in many styles. Thanks for attempting. Research, Research, Research.

I agree with Nicole!!! It is difficult to find new hairstyles and not the same old thing. Having something that looks more natural doesn’t mean sporting an afro. Not every black woman falls on the two extremes of down to her hips weave or an afro. If you are looking for a site on locs, kinky afros or other naturals, type that into your search field. Not that hard! For the rest of us, styles without weave that are innovative and attainable at home are definitely wanted.

Well I am african, a truly one too but I have long and straight hair! So what’s the deal? C’mon people africa it’s 30 millions km², it’s a continent! All africans don’t look the same nor share the same futures! So because Iman Bowie has straight hair she’s no longuer african? Aren’t Mauritians africans?
Get serious!

#13 Rini :

So I’d like to summarize what’s been written and add my personal thoughts. We are looking for pictures of African American hairstyles for women that are not just weaves (which a lot of movie stars do with their hair) and reflect the diverse ways that we can style our hair (which are numerous so why is this so difficult to find!!). These include everything from afro and other natural styles, but also styles that can be done with straightened hair (chemical or heat) with the help of a stylist and even better, done at home.

Personally, I have curly natural hair that is on the finer side so I can’t do a lot of the kinkier styles. Plus I have sooo much of it and it frizzes quickly so the cute curly styles don’t work well either! I end up straigtening it a lot. So clearly i’m in need of some creative hairstyles that i can work out.

I agree with Elizabeth. I have searched the internet and have found way too many western styles for african americans. :( i’ve also found it particularly difficult to find short pretty hairstyles designated towards young people. A variety of styles like the jerry curls, waves, curls, cornrows, braids, locks, and other african-american styles would have made the gallery more acessible as well as different lengths.

Btw, where is Halle Berry?

I agree with most I have long curley hair and I just can’t seem to find a site that shows many natural hairstyles. And as far as the celebs go they spend hours on their hair all I have is 20-30 mins every day of bueaty time cause I have a husband and 3 young kids.

Hey– I am bi-racial with very thick, fine african american hair. I have kept it in braided extensions for the past 2-3 years and only experimented with color and length. It has grown very long and I am in the process of un-braiding it now. I am hoping to find a new hair style and have to agree with many others above- These styles look like weaves or like styles I just cannot obtain on my hair type (other than the afro). I have grown out any dyes or chemicals so i have all new growth and I really love my hair… the thing is I know that in about 3 days from now I will be so frustrated with all this hair that I will be in tears. All I see is relaxed hair and weaves and since im 5 months pregnant I can’t even relax and dont want to ruin my hair!!! Please help!!!

I TOTALLY agree with Miss Dee!! Where are the pictures of the 100% true deal BLACK women, not the bi-racial ladies or island mixed decent ladies. True 100% black women who have the kinky curly natural hair that’s thick and requires extra care to wear? As someone else suggested, show us their pre-weave hair styles! These are absolutely beautiful black women but we all know it isn’t the average look for the average black woman. In addition to these styles, please show some true natural (no relaxers, weaves or bi-racial hair types).

I have been all over the internet looking for natural african hair styles. All there is are weaves and straight, processed hair. This is a sad state of affairs. Every “makeover” and advice about beauty for black women involves weaves, wigs or straightening our hair. Will it ever change??????

I totally agree with everyone. I am in Iraq now and my hair is growing out, so it is getting really nappy. I came to this site to see if I could see some styles for natural(not permed) hair. Get some ideas that I could do on my own head. It would really be nice if this site posted more pics of natural hair styles. Thank you

I agree with # 8, Elizabeth….These hairstyles posted does not depict what is natural hairstyles for black women with beautiful kinky locs…..these hairstyles are what is common in the European looking women who either have fine, curly hair or almost bone straight hair, with or without the perm! Please post something from women who have hair like India Arie, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Lauren Hill and so on. Thank you

I think the hair styles look nice. I think there will always be a critic. I have hair like Jill Scotts, long, and kinky curly. I dont like to wear it like that often. I like to straighten it out. I make sure it is clean, and condition x2, and then let it air dry after combing it. I then put defrizz on it and some condition cream, like pink oil, and use a press n comb in it. Then Its what ever style im in the mood for.

I’m looking for short, curly hairstyles and all I can find are Caucasian women, and then when I look on the supposedly AA women web sites, I see weaves and wigs. I’m just trying to get some ideas of how to wear my hair in a short curly style. I know what I want, but I want to see it on different AA women to determine if it might look good on me….(((((sigh)))))…

Only one person has natural hair (the rest have weave or afro’s). Not every black person wears an afro, dreadlocks, etc. Some of us have a nice grade of hair. For an example check out ‘Mandy’s Hair by DIVA Smooth’. Every black woman should take a tip and use Silk Elements Products. It really makes a difference!

#28 Samantha :

…all of the comments were interesting, but I must ? #27′s mindset esp. sentences 1 &3…is an afro a style not considered to be natural hair regardless of the “grade/texture”…what makes a “nice grade” of hair. ” It’s always been my understanding since childhood that a nice grade of hair is equivalent to “healthy, well maintained” hair be it naturally coarse/straight/wavy/coiled/soft or somewhere in between. …..

I must agree with you #28, now that you mentioned it. good hair is how it’s kept and maintained not a matter of straight or kinky e.t.c
i myself i’m on the vurge of cutting my hair cause it seems easier just to do so and not worry on what i am going to do to my lovely hair.
All the Best!

this picture, wow she looks divine! I’d love to achieve this look, and I want to know if it’s straight hair done with a flexi rod set for these curls or is it some sort of wet n wavy hair. Or better yet what is the name of this actor??? THANKS A TON!!

I need to see hairstyles and stylists doing natural hairstyles besides weaves. You give references and directions on where to go to find info. and how to do a particular hairstyle, but no pics of the actual hairstyle.
