Gothic Hairstyles

Gothic hairstyles are an offshoot of punk hairstyles that are intended to appear romantic and mysterious. Gothic hairstyles can be defined both by color (either deepest black, two tone or unnatural colors such as pink, blue, green or turquoise) and shape (either big hair or long, stick-straight hair). It is relatively hard to find celebrities with Gothic hairstyles to emulate, but a few that sometimes sport the look are Dita Von Teese, Fairuza Balk, Christina Ricci and Amy Winehouse.
Gothic Hairstyles: Beyond the Mainstream
To get the ink black color popular in gothic hairstyles, you can use an over-the-counter single process dye in the darkest color available, which should cover up even natural brunette hair. The goal with this color is to eliminate any shading from the hair. It can be high maintenance because roots show through quickly, even with naturally dark hair, which is why it gave birth to the two-tone look, in which the roots are intentionally left visible. Alternately, you can color your hair with semi-permanent or temporary sprays in bright colors for a Goth look that can be changed easily if you get sick of it.
To get the high volume hair popular in Gothic hairstyles, apply large amounts of styling products such as gel, hairspray or styling spray, and then backcomb or tease the hair until it reaches unnatural heights, finishing off with another round of hairspray. For long straight Goth hair, have the ends cut into uneven points that you can maintain with a bit of gel. Short blunt bangs are another popular Goth look for long straight hair.

I LOVE GOTHIC HAIR STYLE AND I DONT KNOW WHAT I DO WITH MY HAIR SINCE I HAVE NATURAL CURLY HAIR AND IT GETTING LONG HAIR BELOW MY SHOLDER BLADE

I have naturally curly hair as well. I got a Chi flat iron and it changed my life. I can have pin straight hair now when I want and leave it curly when I want. I suggest drying your hair with a round brush pulling it straight. I do it in four sections. Then straighten it with the Chi. It works wonders.

Amy Winehouse’s hairdo is hardly gothic. Its just dramatic. I think you meant Amy Lee from Evanescence

You don’t have to have a specific hairstyle to be “goth”. Goth is ah but one word. Don’t try to fit its role, because if you do then you will never become it. Curly hair is gothic, just as wavy and straight are. You don’t have to dye it black to make it gothic.
To me long, flowing, loose bright blond curls are gothic. That’s all I need. That is now gothic. Of course, I do want to dye a strand violet, because I adore that color. Again, “gothic” isn’t about trying to be it. The whole reason why gothic even exists is because people WANTED to be freaks and be different. And then Hot Topic came along and made teenagers flock in and want to be emo/punk/goth just like everyone else. It went against everything the true goths wanted.
Perhaps gothic hair is just dramatic.

This is emo, not goth. Goth is apparel of victorian elegance and comes in all colors. Hot Topic is a punk/poser store.

i wash my hair every 2 day and i put anti frizz but it is always frizzy what do i do
January 1st, 2010 at 5:16 am
you can use this substance called ‘henna’ in black and red, its some kind of powder, i used it and it made my hair like really black it looked fake, but you gotta use two packets of black henna dye and one packet of red henna dye, and u mix it up in water. Oh! and it took like 5 months or more to get it out of my hair.

Goth is whatever you want it to be. For me, it’s synonymous with ‘dark and cool’ Try substituting it for some things; you can make it Goth if you see fit.
Hot Topic is for those of us who prefer not to throw down several hundred dollars on stuff on the Internet. Truth is, the first Goths from the early 80’s made their own clothes, usually out of thrift store finds. Granted HT has become Twihard-Land of late, they come through every now and then with cute Goth-ish stuff. You don’t have to be a snotty Victorian in mourning to be Goth. On that note, you also don’t have to be a pretentious asshole.
@ Tina;
You should cut down your hair-washing. A LOT. You’re stripping your hair of natural oils that keep your hair soft, and therefore not frizzy. Experiment with anti-frizz shampoos & conditioners (leave-in ones every now and then) and let your hair air-dry rather than blow-dry if you can. If not, don’t dry it completely, that heat gives you wicked split ends and makes your hair frizz even more. Some hair dryers even have a ‘cool’ setting. Hope this helps.

I tend to agree with the angela’s… goth is what you make it…i pickd up making my own cloths or well some of them… I do adore hot topics even if it is a punk/poser store… n as to haircuts/ styles…be creative… I normally sport curly pigtails in a dark alburn during the spring summer fall then straight hair in the winter… my hair has natural waves… n I have natural strwberry blonde hair that I dyed alburn… I’m hopeing to make a website with handmade chokers and hair assesories… for sale… once I perfect my art… its gonna be named pavias corner store… so ill keep ppl posted

I agree with Angela. I am Goth and at first I didn’t even know there was such people as “poser goths”. It’s very sad. Just be yourself and see where that takes you. As for Hot Topic; yes, it’s true that most of their stuff is more fitting for the Emo and Punk seen. However, I for one cannot afford the original Victorian style clothes I would want. Hot Topic is just a nice place to look around in. Also, their “corsets” (usually TRIPP NYC) are a good deal.

People say, “Be who you want to be,” and if people want to be posers, I say let them. It may be a waste of time to us, but to them, it’s not. I personally shop at Hot Topic, but only recently, and I find the brand, Tripp, to be increasingly amazing. They’re just what you wear on the outside, what really counts, is on the inside. People everywhere look different; no one’s the same. We each have our own individual styles and tastes. I may only be 16, but I do have a style. A style all my own. I wear my lace-up converse-look-alikes and my black and red lace Tripp miniskirt, and people notice. The next day, I wear my hair up, backcombed, with extensions of every which color, and merely jeans and a t-shirt. It’s only clothes. Nothing more, nothing less. She was only saying, that people categorize Goth as Emo, it doesn’t mean she thinks that herself.

well to any of you who are truly goth thank you for not following a trend. hmm well personally a true goth hair cut is something unique something no one else has, in the end people may copy you trust me i know but you started something to be different. try cutting it your self and if you are to timid to do so well lets just hope that the hair cutter person understands what the heck you are trying to do other wise well your screwed. yes im saying this form experience.
